Echeveria ‘Melaco’
Bold, Glossy, and Unforgettable—A Succulent with Drama and Charm

If you’re searching for a succulent with richness, depth, and a glossy twist, let us introduce you to Echeveria ‘Melaco’. This stunning plant combines the sculptural beauty we all love about Echeverias with a bold, almost metallic color palette that turns heads. It’s a showstopper in any collection and a favorite among those who love contrast and character in their garden or indoor displays.

But don’t worry—despite its dramatic appearance, this plant is anything but difficult. Echeveria ‘Melaco’ is low-maintenance, adaptable, and rewarding to grow. Let’s explore what makes it special, and how you can help it thrive in your space.

What Makes Echeveria ‘Melaco’ Stand Out?

The first thing you'll notice is the color. Echeveria ‘Melaco’ features glossy, spoon-shaped leaves in a deep bronze, chestnut, or coppery-purple hue, often with glowing hints of green at the base. The color shifts depending on light conditions, making it a dynamic part of any succulent arrangement.

The rosettes are usually 4 to 6 inches wide, neatly stacked and symmetrical. And when in bloom, ‘Melaco’ sends up tall, arching stems with bright coral or orange flowers—a beautiful contrast to its dark foliage.

This plant brings a sense of drama, elegance, and warmth. It’s especially striking when planted near lighter succulents, creating beautiful contrast and texture in your garden or on your shelf.

Why You’ll Love Echeveria ‘Melaco’

Let’s break down the reasons ‘Melaco’ is such a favorite:

  • Rich, glossy colors that add depth and mood

  • Tight, symmetrical rosettes with a bold structure

  • Easy to care for and drought-tolerant

  • Compact and perfect for containers or succulent combos

  • A stunning bloom display in spring or summer

Whether indoors or out, it adds a touch of modern elegance to your space. And it looks just as good solo as it does in a group planting.

How to Grow and Care for Echeveria ‘Melaco’

Like most succulents, ‘Melaco’ thrives on sunlight, drainage, and neglect (in the best way). Here’s how to grow it like a pro.

1. Light: The More, the Richer

This plant loves light. And the more bright light it gets, the richer and more vibrant its colors become.

  • Indoors: Place it in a south or east-facing window

  • Outdoors: Give it morning sun and filtered afternoon light

  • Needs at least 4–6 hours of bright light per day

Without enough light, the rosettes may stretch, and the bold colors can fade to a muted green. Give it plenty of light to bring out those fiery tones.

2. Water: Be Stingy

Watering is simple: let it dry completely between drinks.

  • Use the “soak and dry” method—deeply water, then wait

  • Water at the base to avoid moisture in the rosette

  • In winter, cut watering back drastically

Too much water is the fastest way to harm this plant. If the leaves start getting mushy or translucent, it’s time to stop and reassess.

3. Soil: Fast-Draining is Essential

Soggy soil is the enemy of healthy roots. Use:

  • A commercial cactus or succulent mix, or

  • A DIY blend: 2 parts potting soil, 1 part perlite, 1 part coarse sand

You want the water to pass through quickly and not sit around the roots.

4. Container: Drainage Is a Must

Choose a pot with a drainage hole, always. Terracotta is an excellent choice because it allows excess moisture to evaporate. This keeps your Melaco’s roots safe and dry.

Temperature & Humidity

Echeveria ‘Melaco’ enjoys warm, dry conditions. Here’s what to know:

  • Best temperature: 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C)

  • It’s not frost-tolerant—bring it indoors when temps drop below 40°F

  • Performs best in USDA Zones 9–11 for outdoor planting

If you’re in a colder region, keep it potted and bring it inside for the winter.

Feeding and Fertilizing

Fertilizer isn’t required, but a gentle boost in the growing season (spring and summer) can help.

  • Use a diluted liquid fertilizer, balanced or low-nitrogen

  • Apply once a month in warm months

  • Skip fertilizing in fall and winter

Too much fertilizer can stretch the plant and cause loss of color—so go light and infrequent.

How to Propagate Echeveria ‘Melaco’

Ready to multiply your Melaco? Good news—propagation is easy:

  • Leaf Cuttings: Gently twist a healthy leaf off and let it callous over for 1–2 days. Lay it on dry soil, and wait for roots and a tiny rosette to form.

  • Offsets (pups): Mature Melaco plants often form pups around the base. Remove these gently and replant once they’ve calloused.

  • Stem Cuttings: If your plant becomes leggy, snip the top rosette and root it as a new plant.

In a few weeks, you’ll see fresh growth. A small piece of Melaco can quickly become a whole new plant.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Rotting or mushy leaves? → You’re watering too much or the soil is too wet.

  • Stretched, floppy growth? → Needs more light. Move to a sunnier spot.

  • Wrinkled, dry leaves? → Could mean underwatering—or roots need checking.

  • Pale color or fading tones? → Not enough sun. Increase exposure slowly.

Keep an eye on your plant’s shape and color. It will always tell you what it needs.

Styling Tips for Echeveria ‘Melaco’

Because of its rich colors and glossy texture, Melaco looks amazing in a variety of settings:

  • Pair with pale succulents like ghost echeveria for dramatic contrast

  • Plant in black or white ceramic pots to highlight the leaf shine

  • Use in modern arrangements with stones, driftwood, or geometric planters

  • Add to a succulent wreath or vertical garden for extra depth

It brings mood and luxury to any arrangement—perfect for gifts, centerpieces, or stylish patio pots.

A Succulent That Leaves a Lasting Impression

Echeveria ‘Melaco’ is proof that a plant can be bold and graceful at the same time. With its glossy leaves, warm tones, and elegant form, it creates a stunning focal point without ever being fussy.

It’s easy to love, easy to grow, and endlessly rewarding. Whether you’re just getting started with succulents or curating a collection of unique varieties, ‘Melaco’ adds a touch of richness and confidence to the mix.

Bring home a Melaco, and watch your space come alive with depth, shine, and undeniable charm.

Love all the Barkbox toys
Color: Christmas Consuela, Size: Large Dog
This is our third "Consuela"! Our dogs LOVE these toys, and they are the most durable we can find for our heavy chewers. They really like the ball inside as well. Highly, highly recommend these toys. I won't be buying other toys anymore, just barkbox.

My dog is a toy destroyer
Color: Consuela the Cactus - Large, Size: Large Dog, Color: Consuela the Cactus - Large, Size: Large Dog
I’ve had a hard time trying to find toys that my dog, Zara loves because she’s actually very picky. Ive gotten plenty of Kong toys that are well known to be indestructible but she wants nothing to do with them. Then I got her ropes and that seemed to be good for a while until she was getting sick in the middle of the night from eating all of the string. Stuffed toys aren’t good because she’ll rip them within seconds and eat all of the stuffing. I felt like I’ll never score the perfect toy for her. I found the three layered cactus toy and decided to give it a go. It’s clearly designed to be ripped and destroyed to get the ball in the middle which is actually really cute and fun to see all of the layers. The cactus arms have stuffing and of course that’s the first thing she went for and ate. I had to watch her and make sure I took the stuffing away before she ate it. And before I knew it, she ate half of the first layer fabric lol once she got through the first layer, all she’s been doing is walking around the house with the toy in her mouth. But now she’s tired and passed out on the couch from all of the fun. This toy won’t last long with a toy destroyer but it sure does give them something to do and it’s a cute toy. I do recommend!!

Last a while. Will be buying more toys soon.
Color: Consuela the Cactus - Large, Size: Large Dog
Best dog toy I have ever bought. I have three dogs, two at the time I bought this toy. It took them over a year to break through the first layer. The flower comes off first so be careful your dog doesn't swallow it. It still has the second layer so it still looks like a cactus. No stuffing to clean up when they tear into it, which makes it far less messy than other toys. One of my dogs is obsessed with fetch so I use it like a ball inside. The oval shape makes it hard to ensure when it bounces that it will bounce straight. It's bounced into walls and other stuff that I wasn't intending it to hit. Not much of a squeak so I can let them play with it for hours and I don't get annoyed with the noise. Great toy that lasts a while.

Nice Value
Color: Consuela the Cactus - Large, Size: Large Dog
Very cute! Its soft and feels like it is well made. It is a heavier toy and a tougher one. Not a plush toy. I will order again for our older dogs. Nice value for sure!

Great toy for our best boys!
Color: Consuela the Cactus - Large, Size: Large Dog
You can never go wrong with BarkBox toys and this was no exception. Our dogs like toys that have squeakers and that they can tear into. This style of toy fits the bill. The design is cute as well. I’ve had this in the house for months and, while it’s definitely seen better days, it’s still intact and they haven’t gotten to the inner layer. (Not for want of trying.) The perfect type of toy for our fur babies.
