Aloe fosteri, named after aloe expert Cyril Foster, is one of the more winter hardy aloes we've trialed, although it isn't quite reliable below 10 degrees F. Aloe fosteri can be found growing in rocky soils in South Africa's Northern Limpopo Province and Mpumalanga Escarpment. In the garden, the usually solitary Aloe fosteri forms a 15" tall x 2' wide trunkless specimen composed of thick, fleshy green leaves, adorned with small white flecks and occasionally horizontally banded with silver. Each leaf is also edged with attractive orange-red spines. The rosettes are topped, starting in mid-September for us, with stunning 4' tall spikes of bright orange tubular flowers tipped in yellow. Below 20 degrees F, the typically evergreen Aloe fosteri becomes deciduous. A dry, well-drained site in winter is critical in colder climates. Like its cousin Aloe vera, the sap from the leaves is used to treat wounds.
