Days to Maturity: 45 from direct sow

All-America Selections (AAS) Winner 1980

It has been 35 years since Gold Rush hybrid won an All-America Selection, yet this brilliant golden zucchini is still fresh and appealing among all the new varieties introduced each year. The truth is, its creamy white flesh, waxy bright skin, and unbelievable production in a small space have never been improved upon.

Gold Rush created a sensation when it was introduced, because this plant bears the same big crop in 4 square feet that older varieties take half the vegetable patch to set. The habit is open, which makes it easy to pick the zukes—and of course their bright golden color makes them stand out for easier harvest, too.

But as exciting as the compact habit is, the quality of the fruit is even better. The skin is waxy, creating a nice protective barrier against insect damage and bruising. The golden color is magnificent. And the flesh is white and succulent, for a tender bite the whole family will love.

Expect uniform fruit size from Gold Rush, too. These zukes may be picked young (at just a few inches long) for gourmet veggies, or they may be allowed to reach full size (6 to 8 inches long). Either way, the look and flavor are terrific.

Summer squash ripens during the hot summer months and, thin-skinned, is best eaten fresh. Sow seeds 1 inch deep directly into the garden after the danger of frost is past. Thin the seedlings to 24 inches apart, or plant several seeds in hills 4 feet apart and then thin to 2 plants per hill. For even earlier harvests, start seeds indoors and transplant the seedlings as soon as they have 2 sets of true leaves and the spring soil has warmed up.

Native to North America, squash was grown for years by indigenous peoples as part of the Three Sisters planting. This is a symbiotic combination planting involving corn, beans, and squash (and occasionally a Fourth Sister, sunflower). In this arrangement, the bean vines climb the corn stalks, while the ground hugging squash foliage offers protection to the roots of the bean and corn. Try a Three Sisters planting of your own this year with these fine native vegetables.

Greatly enjoyed this book.
Format: Kindle
His long journey of self discovery is well told, with sprinkles of humor throughout. It made me long to take a pilgrimage of my my own.

Heading to the Camino myself....I've been reading other accounts of it, more so since my plans have had to be put on hold due to COVID19. I purchased a pile of recommendations from others on a social media site, sat up one night, researching the favorites of others. My list only had those that had humor! Brad's book has humor and I love that he, being a songwriter, utilized his talent for putting sentences together, creating a canvas of texture with descriptions, which kept me turning pages. I loved reading about his self discovery, his growth through his business, family life, athletic life, social life, and finding a balance eventually, although the reader can certainly see he teetered A LOT! The downside was that he felt it important to share the sexual experiences, of others and himself. TMI, as a generation behind me would say. It wasn't needed. His adventure was fabulous without it. If Brad ever did a rewrite, I would suggest he leave that out so more age groups could be inspired by his journey! It won't be the first book I'd recommend if anyone asked me what to read about Camino adventures, but I won't say not to read it if it comes up in conversation.

Definitely not my favorite
Format: Paperback
It was ok as far as Camino memoirs go. Not my favorite and probably won't reread/listen again, like I have several others. The author seemed to like to make fun of people and objectify women. I kept hoping there'd be some kind of epiphany, but the closest we get is when he is relaying a life changing conversation he'd had with someone the previous evening where he learned he needs to see the good in people, but minutes before he'd spent a lengthy time ranting and complaining and disparaging "plastic pilgrims." I listened to the whole thing because I was hoping for some redemption, but didn't witness any.

Buen camino !
Format: Kindle
This book had me hooked from page one. Brad writes in way that brings every scene, character and emotion to life. I loved that his writing style is so original. He is transparent, honest, funny, and thought provoking. I have had thoughts of one day walking the Camino, The only Way West has made me both terrified and excited to perhaps do it one day. I hope we get to see more of this quirky author. Buen camino!

Very Good Read
Format: Kindle
His style goes back and forth from travelogue to poetic prose about the scenery and the people he met. Very engaging writing.
