Areca Palm / Golden Cane Palm / Butterfly Palm / Yellow Palm
Botanical Name: Dypsis lutescens
Family: Arecaceae
Origin: Madagascar
Plant Type: Evergreen clumping palm
Overview
The Golden Cane Palm is a lush, resort-style statement for South Australian gardens. Multi-stemmed canes with a natural golden/yellow tint carry graceful, arching green fronds that move beautifully in the breeze. In warm months it shows creamy flower sprays followed by yellow-to-orange fruit. Ideal for tropical looks, poolside screening and big pots in temperate/coastal Mediterranean climates.
Key Features
- Mature Size: 3–6 m H × 2–4 m W (smaller in pots)
- Growth Rate: 30-60 cm per year under good conditions
- Foliage: Feathery, arching fronds on golden canes; dense, clumping habit
-
Flowers: Warm-season panicles; decorative fruits follow
- Seasonal Interest: Year-round evergreen structure; peak tropical look in spring–summer flushes
- Wildlife Value: Flowers provide nectar/pollen for insects; fruits may interest birds
- Tolerance: Drought-tolerant (once established), heat-tolerant, wind-tolerant; second-line coastal-tolerant; not frost hardy (protect from frost)
- Planting Density: Screens/hedges: 1.0–1.5 m centres (closer for faster fill)
- Pet Friendly: Yes — non-toxic to cats and dogs (a safe “pet-friendly palm”)
Where It Works Best
- Sunlight: Full sun to bright part shade (give light afternoon shade inland to prevent tip scorch)
- Soil: Free-draining sandy or loamy soils; improve/clay-break heavy clay or plant on raised mounds; avoid waterlogging
- Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8–12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 7–10 days in summer; monthly in winter if dry (pots need more frequent watering)
- Maintenance: Mulch; remove spent/brown fronds at the base; do not cut green canes; slow-release palm fertiliser in spring (incl. Mg/Mn)
- Lifespan: 20–40+ years (long-lived with frost protection)
- Climate Zones: Suited to temperate & Mediterranean SA gardens in sheltered, frost-protected positions, including coastal areas
- Soil pH: Slightly acid to Neutral
Landscape & Design Ideas
- Lush privacy screen beside pools, patios and fences (soft, non-spiky look)
- Tropical accent in pairs or clusters; underplant with clivia, aspidistra and lomandra
- Large containers for courtyards and entries; group for resort vibes
Why You Will Love It
Fast, reliable and instantly tropical. Golden Cane Palm gives you graceful fronds, golden canes, excellent heat/dry tolerance once established, and pet-safe peace of mind — a standout screening and feature palm for SA gardens.
