Homalomena Selby is one of the most underrated and beautifully distinctive foliage plants available. Its thick, durable, heart-shaped leaves are a deep green marked with creamy white and gold patterning that gives each leaf a painterly, mottled quality. It is a genuinely tough plant that tolerates lower light conditions far better than many decorative aroids, making it an excellent choice for spaces that cannot support more demanding tropical plants.

Good for beginners? Yes. Homalomena is considerably more forgiving than Calathea or many other patterned aroids. It tolerates lower light, adapts to average home conditions, and is very slow to show stress from imperfect care.

Safe for cats and dogs? Homalomena is considered toxic to pets if ingested. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs.

Light needs: Low to medium indirect light is ideal and it genuinely tolerates lower light better than most variegated plants. Bright indirect light encourages faster growth. Avoid direct sun which can scorch the leaves.

Care at a glance: Keep soil lightly moist but allow the top inch to dry between waterings. It prefers warm conditions and dislikes cold drafts. Feed monthly in spring and summer. A very low-maintenance plant once established.
