Botanical Name: Buchloë dactyloides
Variety: Texoka
Seed Ranch Texoka Buffalo Grass is a warm-season perennial grass developed from carefully selected native buffalo grass populations found throughout Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Known for its outstanding drought tolerance and low-input requirements, Texoka is an excellent choice for homeowners, land managers, ranchers, and conservation projects seeking a resilient turfgrass that requires minimal maintenance.
This fine-bladed grass develops a dense, attractive turf that naturally limits weed invasion while providing a soft, durable ground cover. Mature plants typically maintain a height of approximately 4 to 8 inches, allowing many landscapes to remain attractive with little or no mowing. Once established, Buffalo Grass requires significantly less water and fertilizer than many conventional lawn grasses, making it a practical option for sustainable landscapes and water-conscious environments.
Texoka spreads by stolons to create a uniform sod and is well adapted to hot summers, dry climates, and a variety of soil types. Its extensive root system contributes to excellent drought resistance and helps stabilize soil on slopes and disturbed sites. In addition to residential lawns, Buffalo Grass is frequently used in pasture systems, roadside plantings, parks, reclamation projects, and erosion-control applications.
