Marjorie Montgomery was born in Sikeston, Missouri, on 27 May 1912. A s a young girl she was in a group of traveling vaudeville players n Los Angeles, California. In 1925 Marjorie entered the Mary Pickford silhouette contest which selected a lookalike of America's sweetheart. This led to a brief career in movies. However, she is best known as a fashion designer, being one of the elite group of California designers of the 1920s-1960s. She started in 1926, designing pretty and stylish dresses from cotton. In the beginning she knew so little about the manufacturing business that she bought her fabrics and notions at retail. Her most famous line is a series of dresses with hand painted and felt applique pieces. These featured various floral designs along with novelty subjects. and are much sought after by avid collectors. Montgomery designed through the 1960s.
Condition
This gorgeous and sought-after dress is in excellent condition for its age. No notable flaws that I can see. Please note that one of the flowers is has only one layer of petals. However the central pearl is also much smaller, so I assume it is meant to be a bud unfurling. Cleaned and ready to wear.
