Crassula ovata, universally known as the Jade Plant, Money Plant, or Friendship Tree, is one of the most popular and recognizable succulents in the world. Native to South Africa and Mozambique, this plant is celebrated for its tree-like appearance, thick woody stems, and fleshy, oval-shaped leaves. Its longevity and resilience make it a cherished houseplant, often passed down through generations.

Detailed Description

The Jade Plant is a succulent shrub that, with proper care and time, can grow into a small, tree-like form with a thick trunk and a branching canopy. It can reach heights of 3 to 6 feet in a container, and much larger in its native habitat. The stems are thick and woody, turning brown with age, while the young branches are a soft green.

The leaves are its most prominent feature: they are thick, glossy, and a vibrant jade-green color. They are typically oval-shaped and can develop a reddish tint on their edges when exposed to bright sunlight or cooler temperatures, adding to their visual appeal.

Mature Jade Plants, especially when grown outdoors, can produce clusters of small, star-shaped, white or pale pink flowers in the fall and winter. These blooms are a lovely sight and can fill the air with a sweet fragrance.

Growing Tips

The Jade Plant is a fantastic low-maintenance plant, but a few key tips will ensure it thrives and grows into a beautiful specimen.

  • Sunlight: The Jade Plant loves bright light. For the best growth and color, provide at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight per day. A south or west-facing window is ideal. While it can tolerate lower light, it may become leggy and the leaves will be less vibrant.

  • Fertilizing: Feed the plant sparingly. During its active growing season (spring and summer), you can apply a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer once every two months. Avoid fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant is dormant.

  • Pruning: Pruning is beneficial to maintain a compact, tree-like shape and to encourage a bushier appearance. You can prune off leggy stems and leaves at any time of the year. The cuttings can be used for propagation.

Temperature and Hardiness

The Jade Plant prefers warm, dry conditions and is not frost-tolerant.

  • Temperature: It thrives in average room temperatures between 65°F and 75°F (18°C to 24°C).

  • Hardiness Zones: It is hardy in USDA zones 10-11. In colder climates, it is best grown as a houseplant and moved outdoors during the warm summer months.

Water Requirements

Overwatering is the most common cause of problems with Jade Plants. They are highly drought-tolerant and store water in their leaves and stems.

  • Watering Frequency: Use the "soak and dry" method. Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. The leaves may feel soft or slightly wrinkled when the plant is thirsty. Water thoroughly and deeply, allowing all excess water to drain from the bottom of the pot.

  • Seasonal Changes: Reduce watering significantly in the cooler, dormant months of fall and winter.

Soil Preparation

Well-draining soil is essential to prevent root rot.

  • Ideal Mix: A commercial succulent or cactus potting mix is a perfect choice.

  • DIY Mix: You can create your own gritty mix by combining regular potting soil with inorganic amendments like perlite, coarse sand, or pumice. A mix with at least 50% inorganic material is recommended for optimal drainage.

  • Potting: Always use a pot with a drainage hole. Terracotta or clay pots are an excellent choice as their porous nature helps to wick away excess moisture.

Propagation

Propagating the Jade Plant is incredibly easy and has a very high success rate.

  • Stem Cuttings: This is the fastest and most common method.

    1. Using a clean, sharp knife or clippers, take a stem cutting that has at least two leaf nodes.

    2. Allow the cutting to "callous over" or dry out for a few days to a week. This prevents rot.

    3. Plant the cutting in a pot with well-draining succulent soil.

    4. Water sparingly until roots have formed.

  • Leaf Cuttings: You can also grow a new plant from a single leaf.

    1. Gently twist a healthy, plump leaf from the stem.

    2. Allow the leaf to callous for a few days.

    3. Lay the leaf on top of well-draining soil. Roots and a tiny new plant will eventually emerge from the base of the leaf. Be patient, as this can take several weeks or months.

Great Fit and Perfect for Formal Events
Color: Black, Size: 30
I was really impressed with this MOGU slim-fit tuxedo. The jacket and pants fit surprisingly well right out of the box, and the material looks sharp without feeling cheap. It’s comfortable to wear and has a clean, modern look that works great for weddings or formal events. For the price, it’s an excellent suit set that delivers both style and value.

Great Suit, Fits Good and Very Comfy
Color: Navy, Size: 44, Color: Navy, Size: 44
I bought the MOGU Suit 2 piece slim fit suit kinda last minute for an event, and honestly I was suprised by how good it came out. The quality is better than I expected for the price. The fabric feels smooth and not cheap or itchy. The fit was pretty good overall. The jacket sits nice on the shoulders and the sleeves lenght was just a little bit longer than I like, but not a big deal. The pants fit slim but not tight, so I could move around without feeling uncomfortable. I think the sizing is mostly true, but if you're between sizes go up one. The stitching was actually clean and neat. I checked the seams because I’ve had suits before where threads be sticking out everywhere, but this one was solid. No loose ends, no weird cuts. Comfort wise, it’s suprisinly good. I wore it for hours and it didn’t feel heavy or rough. The one-button blazer gives it a nice modern look too. Overall, good buy for the money. Not a high-end designer suit, but for the price range it’s really good and looks way more expensive than it is. I’d definetly order again.

Just basted together
Color: Orange, Size: 30, Color: Orange, Size: 30
At first, I was super excited and thought it was a fantastic deal. I bought this suit for a work event, and got it a few days early. I tried it on, everything fit well, I loved the fabric, nothing was tight at all but neither was it loose. Then, I wear it to work. I even took a picture before heading off to work, where everything was still perfectly out together and no issues were visible. And then I sit down at work to eat my breakfast, and notice that stitching RIGHT OVER MY CROTCH had come loose and made a hole. Not popped, the stitching was not broken or anything, but just unraveled. Nothing was tight, and sitting down and walking felt normal so I know I didn’t strain the fabric at all. The stitches were just loose, and the thread was all over the place. Luckily I don’t think anyone saw, I was able to keep my legs crossed or cover the problem area strategically with my water jug or bag. But my house is an hour’s drive away from my work, so I couldn’t just go back and change. I had to borrow a stapler and STAPLE THE HOLE SHUT. Yes, lesson learned, I bought several emergency sewing kits that I will stuff in everything I carry with me everywhere in case something like this happens again, but still. It was BRAND NEW. Not only that, but as I was in the restroom stapling my new suit pants back together, I found the issue. The crotch area was just basted together, no backstitch or proper finishing at all. And it continues down the leg, I had to be careful not to bend my legs too much or those seams would also unravel. They already loosened a little bit and risked showing my skin underneath just by walking. I managed to play it off and keep my body posed in such a way that it was unnoticeable, especially with help of the staples, but still! Super embarrassing, especially since I’m in a large training class right now and everyone found out just because I had to ask everyone if they had a sewing kit on them. I was so ready to chock this up as a win, too. Good thing I postponed my review. Sloppy sewing all around really, once I took a moment after getting home to look closer. Some areas are sewn well and finished properly, but others are still only basted shut or the end of the thread wasn’t anchored at all. I’m going to spend a lot of time re-doing the stitches, because I’m too stubborn to send the piece back and I know how to sew better than whatever machine made this anyway so I don’t wanna waste the fabric. Such a disappointment.
