Green Mound Japanese Garden Juniper (Juniperus procumbens 'Green Mound')

Green Mound Japanese Garden Juniper, Juniperus procumbens 'Green Mound', is a low, spreading evergreen conifer prized for its dense, cushion like habit and rich green foliage that gently flows over the ground. Short, awl shaped needles cover the trailing branches, creating a soft, textural mat that looks right at home in Japanese inspired designs, rock gardens, and around boulders. Naturally compact and tidy, it stays low while spreading outward, making it easy to use as a ground hugging focal point that ties hardscape and plantings together in sunny, well drained sites.

Distinctive Features

Green Mound Japanese Garden Juniper typically grows 6 to 12 inches tall and 3 to 5 feet wide, forming a broad, mounded carpet that hugs the contours of slopes, edges, and rock work. Branches radiate outward and slightly upward from the center, giving the plant a domed, pillow like shape rather than a completely flat mat. The foliage is a deep, fresh green through the growing season and can take on muted bronzy tones in colder weather, providing subtle seasonal change without sacrificing coverage. Its combination of low height, graceful spread, and fine texture makes it especially effective in compositions where you want a calm, flowing evergreen layer at ground level.

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Prefers full sun for best density and color; light shade is tolerated but may lead to looser growth and thinner coverage.
  • Soil: Thrives in well drained soils, including sandy or rocky ground; avoid heavy, waterlogged sites to prevent root problems.
  • Water: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots, then only during extended dry spells; naturally drought tolerant once established in suitable soil.
  • Hardiness: Well suited to typical juniper growing regions when planted in full sun and good drainage.
  • Size: Low, mounded habit generally 0.5 to 1 foot tall with a spread of about 3 to 5 feet over time.
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate grower that gradually knits together into a dense, evergreen mound over several seasons.

Ideal Uses

  • Japanese and Zen Gardens: Ideal for tucking around stones, lanterns, and water features where its soft, mounded form reinforces calm, ordered designs.
  • Focal Point Groundcover: Use near patios, paths, or specimen boulders where its low, flowing habit and rich green color create a subtle focal point at ground level.
  • Rock and Gravel Gardens: Natural fit for rock gardens, scree beds, and gravel plantings where it weaves between stones and softens hard edges.
  • Slopes and Banks: Effective on small, sunny slopes and berms where you want a low evergreen cover that does not need mowing.
  • Front of Border: Plant at the front of mixed borders and foundation beds to provide a neat evergreen edge that frames perennials and flowering shrubs.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: After establishment, water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings to encourage deep, drought tolerant roots.
  • Pruning: Requires very little pruning; lightly trim stray or overhanging shoots in late winter or early spring to maintain a clean outline and keep plants off paths or rocks.
  • Fertilizing: In average soils, a light application of a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring is usually sufficient if growth appears thin.
  • Mulching: Apply a thin layer of mulch around new plantings to suppress weeds and conserve moisture, keeping mulch off the stems; mature mounds often act as their own living mulch.
  • Protection: Choose a sunny, well drained site and avoid locations where water collects or snow and ice slide off roofs directly onto plants.

Why Choose Green Mound Japanese Garden Juniper?

  • Low, Mounded Form: Naturally forms a dense, cushion like mound that is easy to place at the front of beds, along paths, and around stone features.
  • Year Round Coverage: Evergreen foliage keeps rock gardens, borders, and slopes looking finished in every season.
  • Refined Texture: Fine, needled foliage and flowing habit provide a soft, calming texture that pairs well with stone, gravel, and larger shrubs.
  • Tough and Adaptable: Handles sun, lean soils, and periods of drought once established, making it reliable in demanding sites.
  • Design Versatility: Works in Japanese inspired gardens, rockeries, low borders, and containers wherever a compact, ground hugging evergreen is needed.

With its low, mounded habit, rich green foliage, and rugged, easy care nature, Green Mound Japanese Garden Juniper is a dependable evergreen choice for adding structure, texture, and a quietly elegant presence to sunny, well drained landscapes.

True facts in a really fun, sweet story
Format: Hardcover
I’m not usually a fan of informational books, but this one gives lots of cool facts about a certain bird by weaving them into a fun, sweet father/son story. Pictures are adorable too!

Fun and filled with facts
Format: Hardcover
Stinkbird is a humorous, kid-centric tale featuring the Amazonian hoatzin bird. It's filled with interesting facts about this stinky bird. Esbaum's distinct, fun voice is inviting, and Shea's illustrations are lush and colorful. Backmatter is engaging and amusing, too! This will be a terrific addition to classrooms, libraries, and home bookshelves.

READ BEFORE GIVING TO A CHILD
Format: Paperback
Five stars in hopes it is listed at the top. PLEASE read before you give this to your child! The art work is gorgeous, a very gift able book! I got this for my dragon loving 11yr old as a Christmas book to enjoy in December. Let me just tell you a quick run down of the book.... this child is the only child left unadopted at an orphanage run by a nasty woman and her evil dog. The woman is annoyed by the child and as punishment she cancels Christmas and puts a chain around her ankle and locks her in a dog kennel (yes it says this many times, not simply implied but directly said it and a drawing of it). Finally a little Christmas magic and glimmer of joy when a snow dragon frees her for one quick adventure. That portion is a cute story but it's a very short part in the book. When the adventure is over the child is snuck back in and ankle chain back on and back in the dog kennel. The mean woman returns and says it's time to play a game called "chase".....then the book details what this game is.... this mean woman makes the orphans hold bones and tells them to run, then her evil dog is allowed to chase the kids (scary, not a fun dog frolicking with happy children).....finally at the end the little girl and her sweet dancing dog are adopted. But this book is so sad, this is not a sweet story or Christmas fun. I'm returning the book bc I feel like it will make my child sad instead of enjoy a cute Christmas story. If you are an adoptive parent or a foster parent this may really trigger your children, any child who is sensitive would probably not like this book. However every child is different so for some kids they may be less bothered and just enjoy the dragon and cute last page with the new family walking away together. But read the book for yourself before giving it to a child. I'm 37 with no history of childhood trauma myself and I found this book to be a bit much. I use to be a foster mom and I really wanted to write a review so parents would understand what's in this book bc I almost didn't read it before giving it to my child for Christmas! Glad I read it! The story could have been adorable if they let the dragon be the main part of the story. Not the abuse the child is suffering in the orphanage.

Lovely Winter Solstice Book
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
My son loved this winter solstice story! Told by the perspective of the animals, each one brings a little something to share with the others as they decorate a tree together with their items and it's exactly what I wanted in a winter solstice story for my 4 year old. Not too complex which is ideal for younger children, not soly describing the change of season. I feel like this is more of the heart of winter solstice, coming together with friends and family, being generous and having gratitude, and over all sharing light with each other in the longest night of the year. My son's favorite page is definitely the fold out!
