Plant Care
Light: Provide your Peacock Prayer Plant with bright, indirect light. It thrives in filtered sunlight or partial shade. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. A north or east-facing window is often ideal.
Temperature: Maintain a warm and consistent environment with temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Avoid exposure to cold drafts or temperatures below 60°F (15°C).
Humidity: Calathea makoyana requires high humidity to flourish. Increase humidity levels by misting the plant regularly, using a humidity tray, or using a humidifier. Grouping plants together can also create a more humid microclimate.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water your Peacock Prayer Plant when the top inch (2.5 cm) of the soil feels dry. Use lukewarm, non-chlorinated water and ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot. Adjust the watering frequency based on the plant's needs and the surrounding humidity.
Soil: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix to ensure good aeration and moisture retention. Adding perlite or orchid bark can improve soil drainage.
Fertilization: Feed your Calathea makoyana with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid over-fertilizing, which can lead to salt buildup in the soil.
Pruning: Trim or remove any yellowing or damaged leaves as they appear to maintain the plant's appearance and redirect energy to healthy growth.
Repotting: Repot your Peacock Prayer Plant when it becomes root-bound or outgrows its container. Spring is usually the best time for repotting. Choose a slightly larger pot to allow room for growth.
Pests: Keep an eye out for common houseplant pests like spider mites and mealybugs. If you notice any infestations, treat them promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Perfect film
A perfect film, closely accompanying a public toilet cleaner in Japan. It doesn’t hurt that the actor Koji Yakusho, reflecting his responses to his routine, is very handsome. I was surprised to see it listed as a Wim Wender’s film, the German filmmaker best known by me for the very strange Wings of Desire. It’s one of the best Japanese films I’ve seen!

A fantastic ‘day-in-the-life’ movie set in Japan
I really like this movie. It’s kind of peaceful and relaxing and it’s about the mundanity of daily life and the beauty in that. The story does have some conflict but it’s definitely no action movie. Don’t get your expectations out of wack. This is an artistic movie made on a very low budget and character study of one man who works a boring job as a janitor and goes home and listens to cassettes at night. If that sounds interesting to you, you’ll probably love this movie. Also if you have any passing interest in Japan. I strongly recommend it. Especially for the sale price. And it comes with some nice special features too
