The St. Michael card, our favorite St. Michaels, was done in Germany, probably around the turn of the last century.

The St. Michael card, our favorite St. Michaels, was done in Germany, probably around the turn of the last century. September 29 is the Feast Day for St. Michael, which now includes his friends Raphael and Gabriel and is called the Feast of the Holy Angels. We’d want to make this card for several years and are grateful we finally could.

Michael is one of the three archangels mentioned in the Bible. The other two are Gabriel and Raphael, whose names mean, respectively, “God is My Strength” and “God has Healed.” The El part of their names is from El Shaddai, a Biblical name for God which is usually translated as Lord Almighty.

The Catechism says something very interesting about angels (329-330): "'Angel' is the name of their office, not of their nature. If you seek the name of their nature, it is 'spirit'; if you seek the name of their office, it is 'angel': from what they are, 'spirit', from what they do, 'angel.'" With their whole beings the angels are servants and messengers of God. Because they "always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven" they are the "mighty ones who do his word, hearkening to the voice of his word". As purely spiritual creatures, angels have intelligence and will: they are personal and immortal creatures, surpassing in perfection all visible creatures, as the splendor of their glory bears witness."
