Gardenia jasminoides is a shrubby plant from the Rubiaceae family, native to East Asia. It is especially valued for its white, highly fragrant flowers, which have a shape similar to that of roses. The flowers can vary in size, but are generally large and full, with multiple layers of delicate petals.

Gardenia jasminoides is also known as Cape Gardenia or Common Gardenia.

Caring for Gardenia jasminoides requires attention to ensure abundant blooming and the plant’s health:

  • Light: Prefers bright places, but sheltered from strong sunlight. Filtered light is ideal.

  • Soil: The soil should be well-drained, acidic (pH between 5 and 6.5), rich in organic matter. Use special soil mixes for acid-loving plants.

  • Watering: Gardenia needs consistently moist soil, but not soaked. Let the top layer of soil dry slightly before watering again. Water with low lime content is preferred to avoid yellowing of the leaves.

  • Humidity: This plant loves high humidity. To increase humidity, you can use a humidifier, place the plant on a tray with wet pebbles, or regularly mist the leaves.

  • Temperature: Ideally, the temperature should be between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius during the day and a bit cooler at night. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.

  • Fertilizing: Fertilize the gardenia once a month with a fertilizer for acid-loving or flowering plants, from spring to autumn, to support growth and flowering.

  • Pruning: Pruning is done after the plant has flowered, to remove faded flowers and encourage new growth. It is important not to cut the new shoots, where next year’s flowers will form.

Gardenia jasminoides is often used in perfumery and skincare products due to the highly fragrant essential oil extracted from its flowers.

Symbolically, gardenia is often associated with purity, love, and grace, making it a popular choice for wedding bouquets and other special occasions.

Drama Free For Sure!
Format: Kindle
Nedra Glover Tawwab is a New York Times bestselling author, a licensed therapist, and a sought-after relationship expert. This book is a therapeutic and educational tool that addresses how to consciously change behaviors you’d rather not have in relationships, specifically, around your family. For those of us who have delved into the self-help book world, this is an in-depth, thorough refresher, focusing on family dynamics. Nedra’s core belief is that relationships contribute to mental health. They can cause you pain or they heal you. She focuses on taking your relationships seriously and teaches the art of having tough but intentional conversations to create positive change. OR you’ll learn how to sever ties when the relationship is unmanageable. None is more influential than the formative years we’ve had with our family of origin. A lot of people lament that not everything is about the family, but yup, so often it’s true. In childhood, most likely we weren’t allowed to be ourselves, so our true selves started to develop when becoming an adult. Like a butterfly using its colossal strength to break out of its chrysalis, we too must use our emotional colossal strength to break out of our childhood mold in order to fly. We are able to have relationships with family on our terms.

Insightful and Compassionate.
Format: Hardcover
I really love Nedra Glover Tawwab's work. I started with "Set Boundaries, Find Peace" and that opened the gateway to a broader and more helpful healing journey for me. This book, "Drama Fee" was just an evolutionary step in her series and a more in depth dealing with family relationships. The different perspectives for each chapter on how the concept can be applied was/is helpful as it often feels like books of this nature are only telling the black or white way to focus on a relationship. I felt seen and heard that though my familial relationships are unique there are commonalities and in turn ways to approach healing, reconciliation (with oneself and with family), understanding and compassion, to a achieve drama free relationships. As humans we are bread for connection and I appreciate Nedra Glover Tawwab's help in navigating them.

Read. This. Book.
Format: Kindle
Read this book if you have a dysfunctional family or relationship with family members (including in-laws and extended family). Read this book if you think you don’t. Nedra outlines several different types of familial relationships and how challenging it can be to work through dysfunction or things we have considered normal that are not. Nedra also provides wisdom and tools on how to overcome the many challenges that occur in relationships with family members with gentleness, understanding and realistic observations and advice. Please keep in mind that there will likely be much to unpack from both your childhood and adulthood. It can be an incredibly emotional process in which you might need to take breaks and pauses. However, it is a worthwhile endeavor that will allow you a new, healthier perspective on your relationships with others, and it will cause you to re-evaluate yourself and how you interact with others. This is necessary wisdom for cultivating peace and harmony in your life. I wish fellow readers an eye-opening and heartfelt journey. Be kind and gracious to yourself during this experience and best wishes in creating and living your most authentic life.
