Spigelia marilandica is native to the southeastern United States from Texas to Florida, the mid-Atlantic states and into Indiana and Illinois. It is typically found in moist woods and along stream banks.

Spigelia marilandica 'Little Redhead' prefers partial shade and consistently moist, but well-drained soil. It will thrive in full sun as long as adequate moisture is provided. It can slowly form colonies where it is happy. Although the habit of this plant is said to be more uniform than the species, it does grow taller.
