Philodendron 'Imperial Red'

Philodendron 'Imperial Red' is a self-heading Philodendron grown for glossy leaves that open red to bronze and deepen as they mature. The plant forms a central body, with new leaves rising from the centre and older leaves spreading outward to create a full, layered shape.

New leaves provide the strongest red colour, often opening in red, coppery or burgundy tones before settling into darker green-red foliage. Steady root health, warmth and bright filtered light help the plant keep producing new leaves.

Red new growth and rosette-form habit

  • Leaf colour: New foliage opens red to bronze, then matures into deeper red-green tones.
  • Growth habit: Self-heading Philodendron with a central stem and outward leaf spread.
  • Leaf finish: Smooth, glossy blades with a firm texture once mature.
  • Support needs: Grown as a freestanding plant with no pole support requirement.
  • Indoor behaviour: Best in bright indirect light, warm temperatures and well-drained substrate.

How the colour develops with each new leaf

Philodendron 'Imperial Red' develops colour through each new leaf cycle. Fresh growth is usually the brightest part of the plant, while older leaves become deeper and more subdued. This gives mature plants a layered look, with younger leaves standing out from the darker outer foliage.

The plant grows from a compact central stem with overlapping petiole bases. Good airflow around that centre helps keep the lower growth clean. Removing fully yellowed old leaves is fine, but cutting healthy lower leaves just to expose the stem can weaken the plant’s energy production and reduce the full shape.

As with other self-heading Philodendron cultivars, the roots need a breathable mix. A dense, wet substrate can cause lower leaf yellowing even when the top of the plant still looks firm. Bright indirect light supports active growth, while strong direct sun can scorch or bleach the glossy surface.

Care for active self-heading growth

  • Light: Provide bright indirect light for steady new growth. Avoid intense direct sun, especially through hot glass.
  • Watering: Water deeply once the top few centimetres of substrate have dried. Let excess water drain completely.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky aroid mix with bark, perlite, pumice and organic matter. The mix should hold light moisture while staying airy.
  • Temperature: Keep warm, ideally above 18°C. Cold roots and wet soil can quickly damage the lower stem.
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity supports smooth new leaves. Very dry air can contribute to brown edges during active growth.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during the growing season. Reduce feeding when the plant slows down.
  • Cleaning: Wipe glossy leaves with a soft damp cloth so dust does not dull the surface or block light.
  • Repotting: Repot into a slightly larger pot once roots are crowded. Keep the central stem at its previous planting depth.

Leaf colour, stem and root warning signs

  • Weak colour on new leaves: Check overall growth quality first. Very low light can reduce leaf size and slow new leaf production.
  • Yellow lower leaves: A single older leaf can be normal, but several yellowing leaves suggest too much moisture, compacted substrate or low light.
  • Brown patches: Crispy patches can come from direct sun or drought stress. Soft dark patches suggest wet, cold conditions or tissue damage.
  • Soft base: Inspect the roots and lower stem immediately. This often develops when the plant is planted too deeply or kept too wet.
  • Pest damage: Look for fine stippling, sticky residue or distorted new leaves. Check petioles, leaf backs and the central growth area.

Philodendron 'Imperial Red' grows best with consistent watering, warmth and a breathable mix. Regular rotation keeps the central growth balanced, and a stable pot helps prevent the plant from leaning as the leaves become larger.

Safety with Philodendron 'Imperial Red'

Philodendron 'Imperial Red' is not pet-safe. Leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth, tongue and throat if ingested. Sap may irritate skin, so wash hands after pruning and keep removed leaves away from pets and children.

DeCoster origin and cultivar background

Philodendron belongs to the Araceae family and is native across tropical America as a genus. The name comes from Greek elements meaning “loving” and “tree”, linked to the tree-associated growth of many Philodendron species. Philodendron 'Imperial Red' was selected by Paul DeCoster in Melle, Belgium, from Bamboo Nursery seedlings of unknown parentage.

Philodendron 'Imperial Red' forms a full freestanding plant with red-toned new growth and darker mature foliage around the central crown.

PERFECT PEE PAD HOLDER: AFFORDABLE, EASY TO CLEAN & CHANGE THE PEE PADS, HOLDS PADS IN PLACE
Color: Navy, Size: 22" x 22"
I was THRILLED when we finally received it! I had been everywhere on Amazon & some other sites. I almost bought one that had a small pole since my newly adopted Chihuahua actually lifts his leg, unlike my previous male Chihuahua. But I kept running into a lot of holders that had a plastic "grill" to pee through the pad underneath. It didn't seem like it would be easy to clean. Plus, they were VERY expensive. However, I somehow came across this one. Once I saw the picture, it caught my attention. I watched the video & read more about. The only problem I remember is the video showed one that's foldable & easy to take anywhere with you. But that wasn't the case when we received it. However, I was still very happy with it. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was having to change pee pads because of the size. I changed to Earth Rated because that's what was recommended for this holder. My Chihuahua is around 5 years old & was "housebroken" before I adopted him from a shelter early last year. We live in an apartment on the first floor. But can't always run out the door when he has to go potty. He can wait, but I simply can't drop everything I'm doing to take him outside & I don't want to keep him waiting. He wouldn't really use it at first. But he finally got the hang of it. It's very convenient for him. I bought it primarily because I can't always go outside. Yet, it's perfect when it's raining & neither of you can't go outside, it's great to have when it's not safe to go outside in this area. I bought this around Black Friday week & got it for half its regular price! I'm thinking of getting another one to give him more space (sometimes he misses & accidentally sims for the floor). I've been cleaning it every time the pad needs to be changed. I use Biokleen Bac-Out for Pet Stains & Odors - Lavender Lime scent, which works great, but it's too expensive on Amazon. Also Earth Rated pads don't seem to work well with minimizing odors. I also find it a bit difficult to see if my dog peed because the bottom color is green. But they fit well & have adhesive corners. My dog never chews on the pads. The only problems he has is that he likes to push & pull the pad like dogs do to the grass outside when they finish peeing or pooping. Also, I don't know if the holder we have has non-slip small parts on the corners underneath. So since the floor is laminate & maybe has gotten more slippery from cleaning with the Enzymatic spray cleaner I use, the holder has been slippery lately. In the meantime, I'll try out the 100 pee pad pack sold by Iris, the maker of the holder. The previous pads don't have pads in the right size. I'm referring to Hartz 24 Hour Miracle Pee Pad in Lavender. They're white, but very absorbent & the best part: they help neutralize the odors. I absolutely recommend this pee pad holder! We got the Navy, 22" x 22", which was on a HUGE sale for HALF ITS PRICE! It's too bad I didn't buy two! It's easy to take apart (the top from bottom) to clean. The handles that latch down & the design do a good job of keeping the pads in place. If only I can find pads like Hartz, I wouldn't have to change the pads so much lately. Although I LOVE the Enzymatic cleaner Biokleen Bac - Out for Pet Stain & Odors in Lavender Lime, I'm getting tired from cleaning. But hopefully when it gets warmer here in Florida, it'll get easier again. My dog is really wonderful! I bought this NOT to be lazy, but to give him a happier, more comfortable life. He seems to be happy to have the convenience of the pee pads & enjoys watching me clean!

Our German Sheppard loves these
Size: Medium
These cost a bit more than tennis balls, but they are so much nicer and longer lasting. For starters, they stay cleaner than tennis balls because they’re smooth rubber. Dirt won’t build up on them and if anything does stick, like grass or soil, it falls off once the dog slobber dries. They’re also thick, so they don’t fall apart or blow out like a normal tennis ball does in our dog’s jaws after 30 seconds. Our GS chomps on these like crazy and the only damage they’ve suffered is a crack that developed from the edge of the hole, but the crack is growing very slowly and none of these balls have totally failed yet. The balls do whistle when thrown ant high speed and that may help a dog track and locate it, but I’m not sure. Our neighbors hear the whistling too so it’s far from silent. Lastly the orange ball is easy to locate out in our yard, but the dark blue practically disappears.

Great for smaller dogs
Size: Small
These two balls are perfect for the smaller mouthed dog that loves to play fetch. These balls are not only super durable (lots of teeth biting), but float in the baby pool we use for our miniature dachshunds. The value here is much better than you’d find anywhere else. The noise, if bitten hard enough, was “low” at best. Easy to spot/find if overthrown. Will definitely buy again once these are in bad repair; so far, so good-love these for my fur babies!

My dogs favorite balls
Size: Medium
These are great for my dog who always has to have a ball in her mouth. Not too hard so I don't have to worry about her teeth. They last for ever. They do lose their shape a little over time (like I said, she always has a ball in her mouth) they become a little oval in shape. They still bounce, she still chases it and she still chews on it so I don't think she notices or cares. I've gotten her a bag full of these over time and I have only seen one that she chewed a chunk out.

My Dachshunds Love These
Size: Small
These balls are durable, flexible material, highly chewable without being easily destroyed. I stuff them with Milkbone Maro Snacks, which are just the right size to twist into the holes in the ball. My dogs literally get an hour+ chewing and chasing entertainment from these. They chew them, they sometimes 'pop' out of their mouths, go rolling across the floor, dogs chasing them. This satisfies their urge to hunt prey. Dachshunds can easily tear this kind of stuff-it-toy apart. These have lasted for a long time without tearing or shredding. I would NOT recommend them for a dog much larger than a tweenie weenie. They're a bit on the small side and might be swallowed by a larger dog. It would be cool it they also came in a larger size (and probably ball wall thickness also) for the bigger dogs to enjoy. These stuff-it chew balls are better than the kong balls my dogs had before these. Highly recommend them.
