Introducing the cliff cotyledon, known as Cotyledon Pendens, a vibrant member of the Cotyledon genus and Crassulaceae family; and is good for hanging baskets. Native to South Africa, it is named "Cliff Cotyledon" because of its shape and its natural habitat preference for rocky cliffs and slopes. In the wild, you can often find this trailing plant growing on the edges of cliffs or hanging from rocky ledges, where it receives full sun and summer rainfall.

Cotyledon pendens is a branched, succulent shrublet with teardrop-shaped leaves on dense, trailing stems that branch from nodes and can grow up to 2 feet long. As they mature, the stems become woody with brownish bark. When grown in direct sunlight, the powdery, glaucous coating on the light green leaves turns bright red around the edges. They are attached to the stem with a short petiole and initially sparsely covered with glandular hairs, but become hairless as they mature, giving them a smooth surface.

When it comes to flowering, this species Cotyledon Pendens produces small, tubular bell-shaped flowers that hang down from the stems during summer. The flowers are typically orange red in color and can add a beautiful splash of color to the plant. However, it's worth noting that flowering in this species is relatively rare when grown indoors.

Propagation of Cotyledon Pendens can be done through stem cuttings. All you have to do is take a healthy stem cutting, let it callus and dry for a few days, and then plant it in well-drained soil. With proper care, the cutting will develop roots and grow into a new Cotyledon plant.

Watering Needs

When it comes to watering your Cotyledon pendens, they are adapted to survive in arid environments, so they don't need frequent water supply as other houseplants. When you do water your Cotyledon plant, make sure to give it a thorough soak.

In the spring and early summer, during the growing season, water is deep enough to allow excess water to drain through the drainage holes, and then allow the soil to completely dry before watering again. Avoid leaving the plant sitting in standing water, as this wet soil can also lead to root rot. It's better to err on the side of underwatering because overwatering can cause root rot and other problems. A good rule of thumb is to water your Cotyledon pendens when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.

In the late summer, during the dormant phase, you'll want to reduce the frequency of watering. It requires less water during this time, so adjust your watering schedule accordingly.

Light Requirements

When it comes to growing Cotyledon pendens cliff cotyledon indoors, it thrives in bright, indirect light. Place it near a sunny window or under a grow light, where it can receive plenty of bright light throughout the day. However, be cautious of placing it in direct sunlight, as the intense rays can scorch the leaves. If you notice that your Cotyledon pendens plant is stretching or leaning towards the light, it may be an indication that it needs more light.

If growing Cotyledon pendens outdoors, it prefers partial shade to full sun. It can tolerate a few hours of direct sunlight in the morning or late afternoon, but it's best to provide some shade during the hottest part of the day. If you live in a region with intense summer heat, providing some afternoon shade can help protect your Cotyledon succulent from sunburn.

Remember, the light requirements of Cotyledon pendens may vary depending on your specific climate and the conditions in your home or garden. It's always a good idea to observe your Cotyledon plant and make adjustments accordingly.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer

Cotyledon pendens favors very airy, sandy soil that drains well. Planting them in ordinary porous soil without good drainage will result in compacted roots, stunted growth, and most likely root rot. Instead, make or buy a well-draining succulent soil, or ideally use our specialized succulent potting mix that contains 5 natural substrates and mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your Cotyledon succulent to thrive.

Like other succulents, Cotyledon Pendens doesn't require frequent feeding or any ordinary fertilizer. During the active growing season, which is typically spring, you can fertilize the plant once a year. Use a balanced (5-10-5), water-soluble NPK fertilizer specifically formulated for succulents. Follow the instructions for the proper dilution ratio.

Remember, it's important not to over-fertilize succulents, as this can lead to excessive growth and weak stems. Always err on the side of caution and use a diluted fertilizer solution. During the winter months, when Cotyledon pendens is in its dormant phase, you can reduce or even stop fertilizing altogether. By providing well-draining soil and occasional fertilization, you can help ensure that your Cotyledon Pendens remains healthy and happy.

Hardiness Zone & More

When growing Cotyledon pendens indoors, it is important to maintain a temperature range of around 60-75°F. It prefers average room temperatures and can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures at night. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperature fluctuations or drafts, as this can stress the Cotyledon pendens plant.

Cotyledon Pendens is quite adaptable and can tolerate lower temperatures and average indoor humidity levels. However, it does appreciate some humidity, especially during drier winter months or in arid climates. You can increase humidity around the plant by placing a tray of water nearby or using a humidifier.

If you are living in USDA zones 9-11, you can grow your Cotyledon pendens outdoors year-round. It thrives in temperatures ranging from 65-85°F. If you live in a colder climate, it's best to keep Cotyledon Pendens indoors or provide it with protection during frost, if the temperature drops below 20 F. Cotyledon Pendens can tolerate a wide range of humidity levels. It can adapt to both dry and humid environments, making it a versatile choice for outdoor gardens in various climates.

The Bottom Line

Overall, the Cotyledon pendens is a unique and eye-catching succulent plant. With its trailing stems and fleshy, teardrop-shaped leaves, it adds a touch of whimsy to any space or in a hanging basket. This Cotyledon plant is relatively low maintenance, making it a great choice for both beginner and experienced plant enthusiasts. It thrives in full sunlight to partial shade and prefers well-draining soil. When it comes to watering, it's best to allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again to prevent root rot. Additionally, you can grow it outdoors year-round in USDA zones 9-11. Overall, with the right care and attention, Cotyledon Pendens can be a beautiful and rewarding addition to your indoor or outdoor plant collection.

good hose
Style: -20-Degree, Size: 25-Foot
I installed it about 2 weeks ago, after reading negative reviews, I was prepared for the worse. I did as instructed, kept the thermostat sensor next to the water source and plugged both ends, however the middle of the body of the house was lightly still coiled. When I tried, the water was leaking from under the insulation, where connected to the water source, just as I saw it in the negative reviews. Then I remembered, the instruction clearly say, the house must be uncoiled, so I disconnected, and stretched it out completely in a straight line taking out any kinks, then I took the ends and plugged them in the outlet and inlet. Tested it again and NO LEAK, it works perfectly. That night, it was 25F degrees, the hose was warm to the touch and no leak (the pressure in my sink faucet doubled, I suppose my old hose was not as efficient as new one, etc...). So, it works. I must say, that the instructions, indicate that the heating element turns on below 50F degrees, my hose. turns on when it it is below 35F roughly, which is fine.

A company that stands behind its product
Style: -20-Degree, Size: 50-Foot
I bought one of these hoses at the end of January and it worked great right off the bat. However, fast forward to beginning of this month and the hose itself had failed, leaking water. I was out of Amazon's warranty window, so reached out to Camco directly for guidance on how to get it replaced. Fast forward a week and there's a brand new replacement hose delivered right to my door. Easy communication, fast turnaround and no questions asked (granted, the photos I provided were pretty clear as to the issue). So sure, its not ideal that the first one failed but in a world where it can be difficult to find a reliable brand - I feel very secure working with these guys and they earned my confidence. Hose works great btw. No issues with the connections leaking, water quality, or temperature. This is the one I'd buy again if/when I have to.

Great idea, but the quality control..
Style: -20-Degree, Size: 25-Foot
*TLDR, Too Long Didn't Read* Do Not waste your money. Failed right out of box. Leaked at above freezing temps With upstream pressure regulator. Did not test the heating feature due to the hose leaking from under the insulation sleeve somewhere. Very disappointed. Build your own or insulate well. If you do choose to take a gamble with this item then Thoroughly test it as soon as it arrives and take pics/ video. Would share the video but it won't upload correctly, (not too tech savvy), but I know plumbing, mechanical, etc. The long review: Other reviews have mentioned the hose leaking or failing Even with pressure regulators (which we use and replace regularly) - this is factual. Failed on first hookup Before it reached the freezing temps. Please Do Not Buy this sub par constructed item. It's a shame really since we have bought a lot of Camco branded items over the years. Our unit seemed ok out of the box (bought on sale weeks before the cold season and didn't need it til about 6 days after the return window closed). I should have tested as soon as it arrived but Optimistically Trusted with the 'name brand' mindset. Amazon was courteous, but did not do anything for us except refer us to Camco to try to get them to replace the defective hose. Take our hard learned lesson and many others and Do Not buy these products. Either research youtube for making one from scratch yourself or over insulate your water lines/ hoses and set everything to drip during sub freezing temps (mostly applying to full time rvers or camping in colder climates). We bought the 1in diameter 1/2 in thick 6ft foam pipe insulation (about R2 insul value), foil backed fiberglass pipe insulation (R6 insul value), and then waterproofed with an outer sheath of reflectix and zip ties from lowe's and have had no issues down to 18 degrees with lower wind chills (installed on the fresh water hose, pressure regulator, and water in line filter from spigot post to camper and also wrapped the spigot for good measure). Our rig is 4 season/ belly insulation and sheet metal bottom no skirt. **Invest in the two way hose splitter off the spigot, add quick disconnects, then a "Freeze Miser" or similar product** It will automatically open and drip before it reaches freezing temps to prevent the water line from freezing. Easy to unbox, easy to install (like a regular hose), Only After testing for leaking or defects plug into appropriate safe and rated outlet. Not super heavy (25ft). Keeps a semi coiled memory after unboxing but seems to relax and become somewhat flexible. Nice color. Looks quality at first glance (even though several reviewers like us have had defective units).

Highly recommended
Style: -20-Degree, Size: 25-Foot
I’ve been using this hose for several years now. Plug it in and it heats the hose whenever the temperature drops to 40 or less. My hose has made it through several freezes and works 24/7 with no problems. I will buy another when the times comes.

BOUGHT 2 AND BOTH TERRIBLE
Style: -20-Degree, Size: 50-Foot, Style: -20-Degree, Size: 50-Foot
I bought two of these products 6 months apart from each other (march 2024 and October 2024) both brand new out of the box leaked from this hose connection fitting and is not fixable by replacing the standard hose gasket. Thought maybe it was just the first one was just a dud. It was not, the 2nd one was exactly the same and leaked out of BOTH connection fittings aswell. Yes i tried new gaskets, thread tape / dope, trying to tighten it a bit more, pressure reducer down to abt 35 psi. None of which worked. This product has potential of being good but they used such a low quality connection that it ruins the whole thing. Havent gotten to the point where Ive used it below freezing for more than 1 night so I cant comment on the freeze proofness of it. Tested it with an electrical meter and it uses 690W when plugged in and below the temp rating. I ended up having to repair the hose myself because I couldnt order a chinese brand one instead without running out of time before freezing temps (photographed repair of what is necessary for this to funtion propertly out of the box) but for the price point this hose is at I expect it to last at least 2 years without issues at least, I especially DO NOT expect it to leak being brand new out of the box. If you are going to do the repair you have to carefully cut the insulated sleeve back a few inches without cutting the hose or heated wire and then cut the original hose connector off. At that point you can use pretty much any hose repair threaded connector with a hefty hose clamp nice and tight (dont strip the hose clamp threads though). After spending another 15 min on the repair and $10 in parts you will then have a functional hose for at least 1 week. We'll see how long it lasts now.
