Also known as red bearded upland rice, this special dry-farmed rice has a deep and important history in all parts of the twin islands of Trinidad and Tobago. We grow this rice at Truelove Seeds with limited irrigation with individual plants or several per clump spaced 8-12” apart. This particular selection comes from communities on the south coast of Trinidad, including Moruga. Our original seed came from our dear friend and seed keeper now based in Trinidad who shared this history with us:

Similarities in rice strains and cultivation practices can be used to trace the movement of peoples and plants from specific regions from Africa to the Americas. This very special rice may have been brought to Trinidad via Black soldiers in the war of 1812 who were sent to Trinidad as payment for services by the British army. They were given virgin land in southern Trinidad and after fighting in a war and being uprooted from the American south, they had to learn to cultivate this new land using the knowledge and strength passed down to them. Those soldiers, their families and their cultural ways persevered.

There is evidence that rice predates this history in Trinidad, and it is difficult to trace where this particular strain (one of dozens from the region!) enters the story, but it is certainly a living piece of an African Diasporic tradition of rice cultivation in the Americas.

Planting / harvesting notes

In northern climates like ours, we sow our Hill Rice seeds 4-6 weeks before the last frost, 1 seed per cell, covered ¼ inch. After the last danger of frost has passed, we transplant the seedlings into the garden 8-12 inches apart, in rows 12 inches apart. In Trinidad, farmers direct sow this rice in clumps with many seeds per cluster, spaced 1-2 feet apart during a rainy period. As this is an upland rice, we do not water it any differently than our other vegetable crops. Late in the season when the seed heads begin to droop down heavily with seeds, the rice is nearly ready. Harvest before the last frost when the seed heads turn brown and are very droopy. Watch carefully: many garden pests including rodents and birds will also be looking to harvest the ripe seeds.

Seed keeping notes

See above: for seed saving you harvest at the same time as for food. Harvest low on the seed stalk and allow the seeds to ripen further in a protected place indoors. Remove the seeds by hand or by whacking the seed heads upside down in a large bucket.

Excellent wipes
Size: 25 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Makeup Remover Wipes
These wipes are perfect. They are large, unscented, and remove all makeup, especially waterproof, eyeliner, and mascara. I have always used the Costco/Kirkland ones and they have discontinued them. I have been trying different wipes and these arrive today and they are excellent . I have allergies and dry eye so my eyes are very sensitive. No problem at all.

Soft, Effective, and Great for Sensitive Skin – I Love Them!
Size: 25 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Makeup Remover Wipes
The Cetaphil Gentle Makeup Removing Face Wipes are fantastic! They’re soft, non-irritating, and remove makeup easily — even mascara and long-wear products. The formula feels soothing and doesn’t leave any sticky residue, which I really appreciate. They’re perfect for sensitive skin and leave my face feeling clean, refreshed, and comforted. The wipes stay moist in the pack and are great for travel, gym bags, or quick cleanups. I like them a lot and would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for gentle but effective makeup wipes!

Good for the sensitive skin girlies
Size: 25 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Makeup Remover Wipes
These remove the makeup from my skin without a lot of fuss, and without upsetting my skin at all. I have to be pretty selective about what I'm putting on my face, skincare wise, makeup wise, make up remover wise... because I have really sensitive skin. I've used the Cetaphil cleanser, and actively use one of the Cetaphil lotions in my daily skincare routine since their formulas are pretty tame, so I decided to give the wipes a shot, and I'm pretty pleased with them, so far. I can use these every day without any kind of irritation, and without breaking out the next day, so they get an A+ from me. They're also completely unscented which is perfect. Now, I probably wouldn't try to take off a full face with it, just because there aren't many in there, but I can use just one wipe to take off my brows, eyeshadow and eyeliner pretty easily. Not super thrilled about the pricing for the amount of wipes that are in there, but they're pretty quality makeup wipes, so they're plenty worth it if you don't mind the cost.

I’d Give It 10 Stars
I absolutely love this toner. It has a light, watery texture and feels so calming on my skin. I looked it up and it contains centella asiatica and PHA, so it’s meant to soothe while gently exfoliating and helping skin look smoother. It also has betaine, and the formula is described as good for sensitive-looking skin. For me, this has been amazing for calming irritated skin. I’ve used it on razor burn, bug bites, and spots that needed a little extra soothing, and it really helped my skin feel better. It feels fresh, not heavy or sticky, and I love how gentle it is. If I could give it 10 stars, I would. This bottle has officially earned “tiny skincare miracle worker” status in my house.
