Portulacaria afra, commonly known as "Elephant Bush" or "Porkbush," is a hardy and low-maintenance succulent that thrives in a variety of home environments. Here's how to care for it:

Light

  • Direction of Light: Portulacaria afra does best in bright, indirect light, ideally near a south or west-facing window. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, too much can cause the leaves to scorch. If the light is too dim, the plant may become leggy.

  • Ideal Placement: Place it in a spot with plenty of natural light, but avoid direct sun for prolonged periods, especially in summer.

Watering

  • Watering Frequency: Like most succulents, it prefers to dry out between waterings. Water when the soil is completely dry. During the growing season (spring and summer), you might water every 2-3 weeks, while in fall and winter, watering can be reduced to once a month.

  • Watering Tips: Ensure that the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away, but avoid leaving the plant sitting in water.

Temperature

  • Preferred Temperature: This plant thrives in temperatures between 65°F (18°C) and 85°F (29°C). It’s sensitive to frost, so keep it indoors or move it to a protected area if temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C).

Soil

  • Soil Type: Portulacaria afra prefers well-draining, slightly sandy or cactus mix soil. It’s important that the soil doesn't retain too much moisture, as this can lead to root rot.

Fertilizing

  • Fertilization: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed your Portulacaria afra with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks. Don’t fertilize in the winter when the plant is dormant.

Problems to Watch Out For

  1. Overwatering: The most common problem is overwatering, leading to root rot. Ensure the soil dries out completely between waterings and that the pot has good drainage.

  2. Leggy Growth: This happens when the plant isn’t receiving enough light. If this occurs, move it to a sunnier spot to encourage compact growth.

  3. Pests: Portulacaria afra can occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or scale. If you notice pests, treat with insecticidal soap or wipe the leaves with a damp cloth.

  4. Leaf Drop: If the plant is stressed (due to overwatering, too much sunlight, or insufficient water), the leaves may start to drop. Adjust care accordingly.

General Tips for Thriving

  • Pruning: If your Portulacaria afra becomes too leggy, you can prune it back to encourage fuller growth. It responds well to pruning and can even be propagated by cutting and rooting.

  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years to refresh the soil and check the root health. This is also a good time to move it into a slightly larger pot if it’s outgrowing its current one.

With the right conditions, Portulacaria afra is a resilient and attractive plant, adding a touch of greenery with minimal fuss!

Smells Great and Works Well
Size: 3 Ounce (Pack of 1), Style: Cool Down Lotion
Smells great and goes on really smoothly. Skin felt soft and refreshed after use. It is pretty "liquidy" and can come out of the bottle a little on the quick and messy side, but nothing too terrible.

Works VERY well, NOT sticky, smells AMAZING!
Size: 16 Ounce (Pack of 1), Style: Cool Down Lotion
So... I had sunburn... very painful across my whole back, top of my forehead & the back of my arms. Stupid, I know... USE SUNBLOCK PEOPLE! However, if u don't because u want "a little color" and end up like me, then I highly recommend this after-sun product. It smells amazing and doesn't leave the sticky residue like green Aloe Vera. After rubbing it in, my hands feel super soft. It gives my skin the hydration it needs so I won't peel (and lose the tan I was desperate for). My personal hack... After the sensitivity of the burn calms, I like keeping a bottle in the fridge for that extra cooling sensation. I love this stuff! Sun Bum is a great product... u should definitely try the sunblock tho, it worked where I applied it! I didn't take a pic for obvious reasons, but when u rub it in, it will dry clear.

Works Exceptionally well without feeling like you just applied Super Glue to your Body.
Size: 8 Ounce (Pack of 1), Style: Cool Down Lotion
I would provide a picture of the bottle but TSA took mine. This is some of the best post sunburn lotion I have ever used. I just finished writing a review of a sunblock lotion that did a great job, what I did not mention was the only sunburn I got was on my lower back where I didn't apply that lotion. It was a pretty uncomfortable burn, especially when I tried to sleep in the forward berth of a sailboat, or when I tried to wear swimming trunks with an elastic type waist, thankfully I had a couple of sets of board shorts that alleviated that irritation. But back on point. What I like the most about this lotion is how it applies. Usually, in the past, I did not like using aloe lotions because I felt like it was like glue when it dried on my skin and I felt like it made my skin feel tight. This stuff applies extremely well and I'm not exaggerating one bit when I say the relief is IMMEDIATE. As soon as I applied it to my sunburn, I felt immediate relief! It also doesn't feel like you just spread a bunch of super glue on your burn when it dries. It absorbs into your skin, cools your "hot spot" and doesn't leave a residue to get onto your clothing, or onto the mattress in my berth on the sailboat. Win and win. I can't recommend this product enough. The only negative experience was when TSA snagged my bottle going through security in Miami because I forgot to put it in my checked bag. But that was just the good ol' TSA doing their job in the amazing way they always do. (sarcasm dripping sounds) It works so well that I bought a replacement. So I would recommend purchasing the 3 oz tube if you plan on traveling with it. This is an excellent product, I'm not sure how long it lasts, because I forgot my sunburn was nothing me, or it enabled me to fall back asleep after applying. It does have that coconutty smell, but it's not like I just spent 3 hours in a hot tub filled with coconut oil. Hmmm... Idea forming... Anyway, purchase with confidence, this Texan who got a sunburn on his lower back and treated it with Sun Bum approves this message.

Go-To for Reef-Safe & Light-Weight Sunscreen
Style: SPF 50 Roll On, Size: 3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Favorite sunblock to travel with. Appreciate the simplicity of it, and the fact that it rolls on and rubs in smooth. Of course the iconic scent is also a plus.
