Vitthal stories from Shri Sai SatCharitra Chapter 4
The stories starts from verse 74
What Gaulibua a dedicated Vitthal devotee said about Sai Baba
Gaulibua, a dedicated devotee of Vitthal was a warkari from Pandharpur. He regularly visited Shirdi for his love for Sai Baba, as he used to visit Pandharpur. With a constant chat of Rama-Krishna-Hari he used to set out for Pandharpur along with a donkey and a disciple. He was 94 years of age and spent Chaturmas on the banks of the Ganga (Godavari river) and remaining eight months in Pandharpur. This gave him the opportunity to visit Shirdi which comes on the way, during this yearly journey.
This, really is, the Pandharinath incarnate, the Refuge of friendless and destitute, the All-Merciful One!
Gazing at Sai Baba’s face he would be humbled and exclaimed, ‘This, really is, the Pandharinath incarnate, the Refuge of friendless and destitute, the All-Merciful One! Does one become a saint by merely wearing a dhoti and a silk border? No, Indeed, here one has to wear out one’s bones, turn one’s blood into water, by one’s own arduous efforts! Can one become God for nothing? But He (Sai Baba) is Pandharirao! With a firm belief that this world is illusory one should perceive the divinity beyond it.”
Does one become a saint by merely wearing a dhoti and a silk border? No, Indeed, here one has to wear out one’s bones, turn one’s blood into water, by one’s own arduous efforts! Can one become God for nothing?
Hemadpant writes that if that if such a dedicated devotee of Pandharinath said this, what a lowly creature like him can say about Sai Baba. Let the listeners experience this for themselves!
Sai Baba assures Das Ganu that he will have Vitthal darshan in form
Baba had great fondness for singing the name of God. He ceaselessly chanted ‘Allah Malik’. Often he made the devotees hold a Naam-Saptah (Weak long chanting of God’s name), in front Him which would go on day and night, continuously. Once Sai Baba asked Das Ganu start a Naam-Saptah, to which Das Ganu said, ‘Yes, but Vitthal must appear to me.’
“Yes, yes Vitthal will appear in form before you! Only the devotee must have faith enough!
Placing His hand on Das Ganu’s heart Sai Baba said in assertive tone, “Yes, yes Vitthal will appear in form before you! Only the devotee must have faith enough! Danakpuri (Dakor in Gujarat) of Dakurnath, or Pandharpur of Vitthalrao, or Dwarka of Ranchod – everything is in Shirdi itself. You do not have to seek it far. After all, is Vitthal going to appear from a secret place? Moved by the intensee love of His devotees, he will incarnate in this very place for you. By the devoted service to his parents, Pundalik had won over the Lord of the Lords, who stood on the brick, just for the love and Pundalik’s Devotion.”
As the saptah came to an end, Das Ganu did had the darshan of Vitthal in Shirdi itself, to the truth of Sai Baba’s words.
Sai Baba’s teaching to Kakasaheb Dixit after he had Vitthal Darshan
Kakasaheb Dixit used to sit for meditation after his early morning bath. This was his practise according to Baba’s bidding. One day he had Vitthal darshan during this early hours of spiritual practice. Then as again as a regular practice, with eagerness to have Sai Baba’s darshan he went to Masjid. Wonderful Sai Baba upon seeing him said, Vitthal Patil had come, isn’t it? You did meet Him I am sure! But mind you that Vitthal is very elusive! Hold on to Him fast and fix him firmly at one place. Or else he will give you a slip, if you are inattentive even for a moment.
But mind you that Vitthal is very elusive! Hold on to Him fast and fix him firmly at one place. Or else he will give you a slip, if you are inattentive even for a moment.
This happened in the morning. Later when the sun was on the head and it was noon time another incident followed. Someone from another village came with quite a lot pictures of Vitthal with the intention to sell them. Kakasaheb Dixit was amazed to see that those pictures were exact replica of the Vitthal darshan he had in the morning. At once Baba’s words came to his mind. With great joy, love and devotion Kakasaheb bought a picture and installed it in his puja room.
He keeps me hungry too. Even to Vitthal he does not offer food
Bhagwantrao Kshirsagar whose father was a dedicated devotee of Vitthal used to visit Pandharpur very often. There was an idol of Vitthal in his home puja room. But after his father passed away, the puja, food offerings, everything stopped. Even the annual religious ceremonies for the ancestors were forgotten. Not a word about the pilgrimage of Pandharpur was uttered in the home. Such had become the spiritual interest in his house.
The grace of Shirdi Sai Baba pulled him to Shirdi. On seeing him Sai Baba remembered his father and said, “He was my friend and since he(Bhagwantrao) is the son of my friend I have pulled him to Shirdi! He makes no food offering to Gods anymore. He keeps me hungry too. Even to Vitthal he does not offer food and so I have dragged him to Shirdi. I shall now remind him of everything and thus make him perform the daily pooja(worship).”
He was my friend and since he(Bhagwantrao) is the son of my friend I have pulled him to Shirdi! He makes no food offering to Gods anymore. He keeps me hungry too.
